How to Fix the Power Cord on a Dryer When Its Display Is Not Working

If your dryer’s display is no longer working properly, it could be because of an issue with your dryer’s power cord. The power cord in any appliance is used to deliver power from your wall outlet to be used within the appliance. If it’s damaged or bad, it can cause the delivery of power to either not happen at all, or to damage other components within the appliance. Luckily, the power cord is an easy part to inspect and an even easier part to replace. Also, if it’s the part causing your issues, it means you can rule out more expensive repairs like the control board. We will help you troubleshoot your dryer display issues and determine whether the power cord is responsible.

What is a Power Cord?

A power cord is a cable, usually made up of a few smaller cables, that runs from the wall outlet within your home, to the inside of an appliance to deliver electricity to be used for various functions.

Where is the Power Cord Located?

The power cord of your dryer is normally located in the rear of the machine, but its exact location depends on your model. You can refer to a general location in the diagram below, but your user manual will give you the exact location in your dryer.

How To Access, Remove, and Inspect the Power Cord in a Dryer

  1. Remove your dryer from the wall outlet.
  2. Open the panel at the back of your dryer with the appropriate tool, which will vary depending on your dryer and the fasteners it uses to connect the panel.
  3. Disconnect and remove the fasteners attaching the current power cord. Your dryer’s cord will likely be 3 or 4-pronged, according to the number of colored cords attached within the panel. For 4-pronged connections, you’ll need to remove the ground-wire as well (usually green or green with yellow stripes). Some manufacturers also use copper wire to indicate a ground-wire.
  4. You’ll want to check your terminal block and power cord for any signs of burns or physical damage. If either has any sort of visible damage, they’ll need to be replaced immediately. Check out how you can replace your terminal block here.

How to Test a Power Cord

  1. If a visual inspection doesn’t give any clues that the cord is faulty cord, you can test your power cord for continuity with a multimeter.
  2. Set your multimeter to continuity mode and touch the probes to the terminals on the power cord.
  3. If the multimeter indicates continuity with an audible beep or visual, the cord won’t need replacing. But if the cord doesn’t show any sign of continuity, it is defective and will need to be replaced.

How to Install a New Power Cord

  1. Connect the power cord to the new terminal block, either by fastening the terminal block’s screws to the power cord or retaining nut connectors.
  2. Install the terminal block to the dryer, and connect the ground-wire.
  3. Close the access panel.
  4. Reconnect the top portion of your dryer back, and secure with any necessary screws.
  5. Plug your dryer back in, and your repair is now complete!
