How to Fix an Agitator Coupler for a Washer That Will Not Agitate

There are a few different indicators that can confirm if the agitator coupler and bolts in your washer are damaged. The obvious one is that your machine can’t agitate. This is due to the coupler wearing out and causing the agitator to turn freely in the tub. The information below provides more information on diagnosing and resolving this problem. You will find 3D renderings, step-by-step guides, and instructional videos to help you out.

What are the Agitator Coupler and Bolts? Where are they Located?

Some models of top-loading washers use a coupler between the transmission shaft and the agitator. The drive coupler is splined on the inside to match the transmission and splined on the outside to match the agitator.

How to Tell if the Agitator Coupler and Bolts are Damaged and How to Inspect Them

If your washer is making a grinding noise during the wash cycle and the agitator turns freely, then the drive coupling may be damaged. The following steps will help you assess the condition of your washer's agitator coupler and bolts:

  1. Disconnect your washer from the power source.
  2. In order to access the agitator coupler, you first need to remove the fabric softener dispenser or top cover, depending on your model. Then remove the agitator.
  3. Remove the coupler from the appliance by unthreading the bolt securing it to the transmission shaft. Inspect the coupler for any signs of cracking, damage, burning, rust, or wear.
  4. If you find any of the above, you need a replacement agitator coupler.

How to Access and Remove the Agitator Coupler from Your Washer

  1. Unplug the washer and use some strength to pull the agitator straight up because it’s generally tightly attached.
  2. Take off the bolt that holds the coupler onto the shaft of the transmission and pull that coupler off.
  3. While you are there, clean any dirt, rust, or residue off the transmission spline grooves, and make sure that the grooves on the agitator splines are clean and undamaged.

How to Install a New Agitator Coupler and Bolts

  1. The replacement coupling comes with a new gasket and bolt, which should be used.
  2. Set the agitator on a flat surface and, using the ratchet and a hammer, knock the old coupling out from the base of the agitator.
  3. Take a new coupling and press it into place, locking the tabs into place.
  4. Insert the new bolt and install the agitator back in place inside the washer.
