How to Fix a Pressure Switch for a Washer That is Leaking

If your washer is leaking, the pressure switch may not be working as it should. The pressure switch has a hose that can be clogged with foreign objects or damaged through regular wear and tear. This causes the switch to fail to read the water level, which results in a leaking washer. Furthermore, if the electrical contacts in the switch are damaged, the switch may be unable to redirect power, which could also be the cause behind a leaking washer.

What is a Pressure Switch?

The pressure switch is responsible for informing the control panel whether the machine has been filled or emptied; it allows your washing machine to detect when it is sufficiently filled. When water starts filling your machine, air is pushed up the hose by the rising level of water in the drum. The air rises until it activates the pressure switch. At the end of the wash cycle, the control board directs the washing machine to start flushing out the water. The pressure switch then tells the control board when the machine is empty, so that the spin cycle may begin.

It is possible for the pressure switch to experience electrical issues or become damaged. You will need to inspect it to determine if it is causing your washer to leak.

Where is the Pressure Switch Located?

The pressure switch is typically found at the top of the machine, inside the control board/console. However, it can also be found inside the cabinet. It will have a chamber attached to the bottom of the drum and a pressure hose connecting to the switch.

How to Access, Remove, and Inspect the Pressure Switch in a Washing Machine

1. Unplug your washer and turn off the hot and cold water supply valves.
2. You will need to access the inside of the console to reach the pressure switch. Do this by removing the back panel of the console or by releasing the front clips on the console.
3. Gently remove the air pressure tube from the old pressure switch, using a pair of pliers.
4. Squeeze the tabs underneath the control panel bracket to release the pressure switch.
5. Disconnect the wire harness from the old switch and test the pressure switch for continuity.
6. Connect the prongs on your multimeter to the two outside terminals.
7. Blow into the hose to create pressure and check the reading on the meter.
8. If the reading is not within range or there is no reading, then the part has failed and will need to be replaced.
9. Check the hose for any damage. If any is present, you will need to replace it with a new one.

How to Install a New Pressure Switch

1. Follow the steps in “How to Access, Remove, and Inspect the Pressure Switch” to remove the pressure switch.
2. Discard the old pressure switch and reconnect the wire harness to the new switch.
3. Place the pressure switch on the control panel bracket and secure it in place.
4. With the bracket repositioned, connect the air pressure tube to the new switch.
5. Place the rear panel back in its position and reinstall all the screws.
6. Slide the control panel/console back on and ensure that it is firmly in place.
7. Reconnect the water supply hoses to the inlet valve and turn the water supply back on.
8. Plug your machine back in and your repair is complete.
