How to Fix the Thermal Fuse for a Dryer That Will Not Start

If your dryer won’t start or turn on, the cause could be its thermal fuse. The thermal fuse is a safety device in a dryer, similar to a thermostat. It turns off all power and operation of your appliance when the internal temperature is too high. So your dryer will not start, and the blown thermal fuse must be replaced. You may also want to find out why your dryer may have overheated, as a matter of safety and so as not to blow any more fuses. We have prepared a guide that shows you how to figure out if your dryer’s thermal fuse is the cause of your problem, and how to replace it!

What is a Thermal Fuse?

A thermal fuse is a safety device. It is similar to the thermostat that opens the circuit of your dryer when the internal temperature is too high, shutting off all power and operation when high heat is detected.

Where is the Thermal Fuse Located?

The thermal fuse is attached to the blower vent. On gas dryers it may also be located near the burner. If you see another component on the heating element, it is likely some variant of a thermostat. If it has failed, you can test it in the same way as you test your thermal fuse. Refer to the 3D diagram below if you’re having difficulty locating yours. But keep in mind that this is a general location. Your user manual will indicate the exact location of the thermal fuse in your dryer.

FIX TIP

FIX TIP

Before you begin the repair process, shut your dryer off and remove your dryer’s lint screen.
  1. Using a suitable screwdriver, socket-head and putty knife, unsecure and disconnect the top panel of your dryer.
  2. Disconnect the user interface panel and the attached cable or wire harnesses and sensors.
  3. Unscrew, disconnect and remove the back portion of your dryer. Repeat this step for any vents or lint screens that may be connected at the rear of the machine.
  4. Locate your thermal fuse, near the heating element, burner or blower vents. Remove it.

How to Test a Thermal Fuse

  1. With your multimeter set to continuity mode, touch the two probes to the two terminals on your thermal fuse.
  2. If your multimeter gives no visual or audible indication of continuity, the thermal fuse must be replaced.

How to Install a New Thermal Fuse

  1. Connect the new fuse to the correct terminals and screw it back into place.
  2. Resecure the rear panel and any lint screens or vents.
  3. Reattach the top panel, user interface panel, and any cable or wire harnesses.
  4. Reinsert the top lint screen, if applicable. Your repair is now complete!
