How to Fix the Drum Baffles for a Noisy Dryer

If you are hearing a loud rattling noise from inside your dryer, the drum baffles might be the cause. It is easy for small items such as coins or screws to lodge themselves inside the baffles while the dryer is in use. You will need to remove the baffles to see if there are any objects inside them. Items may also get stuck if the baffles are damaged or have a crack in them. In this case, you will need to replace the damaged baffle or baffles; otherwise, your clothes may get caught on the damaged parts and tear.

How to Diagnose the Drum Baffles

Visually inspect your baffles to find out if they are the ones causing noise in your dryer:

What are Drum Baffles?

The drum baffles resemble “fins” and help keep air circulating inside the dryer. They are also designed to move clothes around the drum so that they dry evenly and don’t clump together into one soggy mess.

Where are the Drum Baffles Located?

The drum baffles are located on the inner walls of the drum in your dryer.

What Type of Noise Can You Expect?

Defective drum baffles would produce a rattling noise during the dryer's spin cycle.

How to Access and Remove the Drum Baffles

  1. Begin by disconnecting the dryer from the electrical outlet for your safety.
  2. Take the lint filter out of your dryer. Depending on your dryer model, the lint filter will either be on top of the cabinet, inside the dryer drum close to the dryer door, or need to be accessed through the back of the machine.
  3. Lift the top panel of the dryer and rest it backward to see the drum baffles. The method for doing this will vary depending on your model.
  4. Release the drum baffle by removing the screws that secure it to the drum and pull it out of the machine.
  5. Now inspect the inside of the baffle to see if there are any objects caught inside.
  6. Inspect the baffle for signs of cracking or wear.

How to Install New Drum Baffles

  1. Begin by disconnecting the dryer from the electrical outlet for your safety.
  2. Discard the old drum baffle and place the new one in the empty space.
  3. Ensure that the holes on the baffle are aligned with the holes on the drum.
  4. Fit the screws back into their appropriate position and ensure the baffle is firmly in place.
  5. Lower the top of the dryer down and secure it.
  6. Reinstall the lint filter in your machine.
  7. Plug the dryer back in, and your repair is complete!
