Product Description

This drive motor operates the dryer by turning the drive belt which spins the drum and will fit most Whirlpool incorporated dryer brands before 1996. If the motor has shorted out, it will no longer turn the drum and will need to be replaced. The drive motor includes the pulley that is not available separately. This is a genuine OEM part. Please remember to disconnect the power to your dryer before starting the repair.

Motor would overheat and shut off in the middle of the cycle.
Replaced the drive motor using the installation video listed with the part. The instructions were accurate and very easy to follow.

Squealing noise when running, bad motor bearing; needed new motor.
The instructional videos that this site provides are really great and most helpful. If changing a motor or blower, it will tell you to hold the motor shaft while loosening the blower, (CAUTION: left hand thread). Those instructions would be great for a dryer that is almost new but the likelihood of needing to change the motor or blower wheel on a fairly new dryer would be slim. Because my dryer was not new, as I suspect most needing repairs aren't, I ended up doing what most everyone else had to do and that is,cut the shaft that extends into the blower wheel because that blower wheel absolutely refuses to break free from the motor shaft, most likely because it's seized onto the shaft, probably caused by years of moist air in the blower tunnel, (too bad the factory doesn't put a dab of Never Seize on the threads before assembling it when new). In any case, if you determine that you need a new motor, do yourself a favor and order a new blower wheel at the same time, then plan on cutting the old one off if it fails to budge on your first attempt. I used a Milwaukee M12 Hackzall, which is their smaller mini cordless reciprocating saw, with a 6" blade. A six inch blade is just long enough that it will flex, allowing the space required to get in between the blower and the end of the motor. You might be able to get a full size reciprocating saw in there although it will be tougher. Be careful not to destroy the felt seal on the cabinet wall that keeps the lint out of the main cabinet. Once the motor and blower are free of each other, the rest is simple and quick. If I spent two and a half hours completing the repair, 90% of that was trying to unscrew the blower from the motor. Blower wheel removal was dificult
When replacing the motor in the whirlpool dryer I was not able to loosen the blower wheel. I learned that this is a common problem and found other notes here at partselect.com about how to cut the blower wheel off. I followed the blower wheel removal video instructions to access it. I did not have a proper cutting tool so instead I used a hole saw and drill. Using a 1 1/2" hole saw and drilling off center so as not to contact the motor shaft I drilled threw the plastic blower wheel. Once the blower wheel was off I had to reduce the size of the remaining plastic still connected to the shaft with channel locks or vice grips. Very important note here, be sure to leave the retaining clips on the motor and place vice grips on the pully side of the motor shaft to prevent rotation while drilling. I found out the hard way that the motor mount brackets are easily bent and damaged if the motor is not secured to them with the retaining clips. I found the clips difficult to reinstall too and used large channel locks to squeez while pushing down with a standard screwdriver. Good lick with your repair.

Motor made a noise, overheated and shut down
I watched your video on how to replace the motor and proceeded to take the dry apart. Of course, the first thing I did was unplug the dryer, popped open the top, removed the 2 screws at the top releasing the front panel, unplugged the safety door connector, removed the drum and then did some troubleshooting. All those steps were just as described in the video. Very simple task. I now have access to the motor and wanted to make sure it was the motor and not something binding the motor from running freely. I have a background in electricity and electronics so the next step was not a concern to me. I put a jumper across the connector for the safety door switch, plugged the dryer in, operator the dryer button and observed to motor. The motor ran for about 20 seconds, smoked a bit and shut down. I unplugged the dryer again and checked the motor to see if it was free spinning and it was. Next step was to remove the motor as directed in the video. However, it was easier to remove the blower fan before removing the fasteners for the motor. Took the motor out, checked the part number and ordered a new motor. The motor arrived 2 days later, installed it and put everything back together. I would like to add that the drum did not stay up as the video described when trying to connect the drum belt to the motor pulley. I used a piece of 1x4 standing up on its side and placed it under the drum. It was just enough to allow me access to the motor pulley and get the belt around it. Also, after it was back together and running properly I checked the felt on the drum and noticed it was bunched up a bit. From inside the drum I used a big flat head screw diver and pushed the felt into place. Slowly turned the drum and kept working the felt until it was obvious that all the felt was properly installed. Unassemble took 15 minutes. Assembly took 25 or 30 minutes. Dryer like new. Thanks for the great video.

Dryer wouldn't spin
Dryer slowly died, so I determined it was the motor. On this model dryer, you need to take the back panel off. Don't forget to unplug the dryer. Then, you need to take off the part that holds the screen. There are two screws on top, and about 4-5 on the back. You should then be able to see the fan. Swing open the top, and take the two scr ews out that are on the inside at the front near the top. Then lift the front panel up and off while supporting the drum. Bend down while still holding the drum and undo the belt. Lift off drum and set aside. There are two snap clips holding the motor. Remove the rear one, and you will see the back of the fan. You can try a wrench on the fan and on the pulley to remove, but mine just stripped the fan. I put a wrench on the pulley and just used my hand to turn the fan off. Then you can take the front clip off the motor, unplug it, and remove it. Do these steps in reverse to put it back together. It took about an hour.

Drum motor went out
I followed the example posted on the website to a T and it couldn't have been more simple. It took me right at about 20 minutes to swap out the motor, the drum wheels, the pulley and the belt and put it all back together. I now have a 15 yr old dryer that works like new.

Dryer noisy when operating and not spinning at times.
A Google search led to this site where the problem was quickly narrowed down to a handful of parts. I had disassembled the dryer before, but a quick review of one of the videos refreshed my memory. This repair was a piece of cake...dryer is now running like new.
