How to Fix the Terminal Block for a Dryer That's Not Heating

When your dryer is running but isn’t heating properly, it might be an issue with your dryer’s terminal block. The terminal block is responsible for managing all power coming from the wall outlet and delivering it to the proper components of your washer. This means that your terminal block could be underpowering your dryer’s heating element, leading to it not being able to heat up enough, or at all. To help you not only find the terminal block, but diagnose any issues with it, we have put together a complete guide with videos and diagrams to help you through this entire process!

What is a Terminal Block?

The terminal block is a part within your dryer that receives all power from your home’s wall outlet and sends that power to the different parts of your dryer, like the control board and the motor.

Where is the Terminal Block Located?

The terminal block is located at the rear of the machine, usually near the top of the machine, but the specific location can vary among models and makes. Refer to the 3D rendering below for further help!

How to Access, Remove, and Inspect the Terminal Block in a Dryer

  1. First, you’ll want to simply remove the back panel and the thermostat should be located near the heating element housing or vent.
  2. Locate the thermostat and unscrew the securing screws.
  3. Remove any wires connected to the thermostat.

How to Test the Terminal Block

  1. The best way to inspect the terminal block, is to look for any visual signs of burnout or heat damage. This could include deformity, scorch marks, melting, and so on, and could be accompanied by a strong burning smell.
  2. If the wires also have visible damage to them, similar to the terminal block, your power cord will also need to be replaced.

How to Install a New Terminal Block

  1. With a wire cutter, cut each wire just below the crimp connector (the thicker part leading into the terminal block).
  2. Remove each connector within your new terminal block.
  3. With a wire stripper, remove the quarter-inch of insulation from the end of each wire. Be sure to place a small strip of shrink-tube around the end of each connector, just before the exposed wire.
  4. Place the exposed wire within the crimped portion of the connector.
  5. Using a crimper die, crimp the inside exposed wire and the inner -chamber together. Do this for all of the connectors.
  6. Slide the heat-shrink tubing over the barrels and, with a heat -gun, shrink the tubing into the right place.
  7. Now you can place the connectors back into your new terminal block, with the same arrangement as was there previously.
  8. Reinstall the terminal block to the dryer and connect the ground-wire.
  9. Close the access panel.
  10. Slide the top portion of your dryer back into place, and secure with the necessary screws.
  11. Plug your dryer back in, and your repair is now complete!
