How to Fix the Light Bulb for a Dryer That Has Burned Out or Been Damaged

It’s normal for a light bulb to stop working over time. The most common reason for a dryer lightbulb to stop working is a burned-out filament due to general wear and tear. It’s also possible for the electrical contacts to corrode or become dirty. Finally, if there is a wiring problem inside your dryer, it may affect the functioning of the light bulb.

To determine what is causing your light bulb issues, you will need to visually inspect the bulb for signs of damage or burning. You can also use a multimeter to test the continuity of the bulb and ensure that it is functioning correctly. This step-by-step guide will show you how to access and inspect the lightbulb in your dryer. If you need to replace the lightbulb, we’ll help you with that too.

What is a Light Bulb?

A light bulb in a dryer is a small light fixture that illuminates the inside of the dryer drum. It should turn on when the door is open, so you can easily see the contents of the dryer and make sure everything is properly loaded or unloaded. And it should turn off when the dryer door is closed to prevent electrical hazards.

Where is the Light Bulb Located?

The light bulb is usually located at the back of the drum, near the top. Some models may have a cover over the bulb, while others may have an exposed bulb.

How to Access, Remove, and Inspect the Light Bulb in a Dryer

  1. Unplug the dryer from the electrical outlet to avoid any potential hazards.
  2. Locate the light bulb inside the dryer drum. It is usually located near the back of the drum, but the location may vary depending on the model of your dryer.
  3. If the bulb has a cover, gently pull it off.
  4. Use a pair of pliers or a small screwdriver to gently twist the light bulb counterclockwise. Be careful not to apply too much pressure, as the bulb may shatter and cause injury.
  5. Once the light bulb is loose, carefully remove it from the socket by pulling it straight out.
  6. Inspect the light bulb for any visible signs of damage, such as a broken filament or a blackened spot.
  7. If there is no damage present, you will need to test the lightbulb for electrical issues.

How to Test a Light Bulb

  1. Set the multimeter to the continuity setting and touch the probes to the metal contacts at the base of the bulb.
  2. If the meter makes an audible sound or shows a reading of zero, the bulb has continuity and is working properly. In this case, you will need to investigate another part of the dryer for potential failure.
  3. If there is no sound or reading, the light bulb is likely faulty and will need to be replaced.

How to Install a New Light Bulb

  1. Check the wattage and type of bulb recommended for your dryer in the user manual or on the dryer itself.
  2. Discard the old light bulb. Insert the new light bulb into the socket and gently twist it until it is securely in place.
  3. If your dryer has a cover, replace it and secure it in position.
  4. Plug the dryer back into the electrical outlet and test the light bulb to make sure it is working.
